DWP Light Festival...Done Right
The DWP Light Festival is either going to be your favorite outdoor holiday tradition...or the event you swear never to return to! With it's quirky old-timey feel and large scale figures and action, the Light Festival puts a unique spin on Christmas light displays. Our advice about how to revel in the twinkling beauty and communal feel, while avoiding the crowds and tailgate fumes. DWP Light Festival Web Page Walk, Don't Drive There's a reason they really promote the pedestrian only nights. Oh sure, it's greener and all. But most important? It's actually fun! You'll park at the LA Zoo lots, then take your time as you stroll through the tunnels of light and past the charming vignettes. And if you drive? A line of cars that starts at the freeway, a driver who can't take his eye off the road, kids who whine and fuss after sitting so long, a mad dash to the Porta-Potty from the car, fumes from the 1988 Dodge in front...get the picture? You're welcome. Dress in Layers In typical L.A. fashion, the festival rolls out along a stretch of Griffith Park Drive with at least three different microclimates. You'll experience noticeable temperature changes from one end to the other. It is Los Angeles, so don't go overboard, but be prepared for warm and balmy all the way to cold and damp. There's No Place To Sit If you brought snacks, dinner, hot chocolate or more (wink wink), be prepared to enjoy it in your car. Being in a rather isolated part of town, you won't find a convenient restaurant or store nearby either. There's No Place to Pee Well, techinically that's not true. There are porta pottys. At Mommy Adventure Club, we're intrepid and bold, so that doesn't bother us that much. But the problem here is that the porta pottys are in a barely lit section of the road with the main crowd passing by. If they're still potty training...bring your own from home. At the east end of the route, you can also hike up the hill to the park bathrooms. Bring a Camera It just might work. In several sections of the route, the tunnels of light might just be strong enough for your camera to pick up the image. Relax It really is fun, and magical, and all about the season. So slow down, Ooh and Aah, and enjoy the moment. |
